Aerate and overseed:

Aeration is a process that mechanically removes plugs of soil and deposits them on the top of the soil surface. This relieves compaction and allows oxygen and nutrients to penetrate the soil. 

Overseed is a way to fill in bare spots, improve the density of the lawn and enhance the lawn's color. Overseeding is most beneficial at the time of aeration. It allows the grass seed to penetrate the soil.
